Part 4: She Became
It was Christmas morning 2018. The boys had already discovered their gifts from Santa and opened gifts from us. Then, sitting there taking in the beauty of the mess, Eric laid his computer on my lap. I looked at him in wondering puzzlement as he simply said, “Open it.” As I did, I began to see the two words I had held onto for 7 years but didn’t know what I was holding them for. Free and Fancy. With the computer fully open, along with my mouth and wide eyes, I realized he had purchased the domain name and started a blogging website…for me! So, the fact that you are reading this right now is all thanks to Eric.
Writing wasn’t necessarily my dream. I mean, in my eyes, making the occasional Facebook post with scripture attached certainly didn’t qualify me as a writer. Before this blog, I would just share what I had read in the morning. I would sometimes include how God was speaking to me through it. I would think, “maybe if I share, someone could be motivated to pick-up their Bible and hear from God too!” How exciting would that be? Picture it: all of God’s daughters and sons reading His Word. Putting an ear to the pages of scripture and applying it to everyday life, everyday hopes, and everyday struggles.
Each time I wrote these posts on Facebook, Eric saw it as me stepping out in faith over my fear of what others might think. He saw it as me breaking the jar of Jesus’ love and pouring it out for others who might need it. He saw it as me preparing the way for a future that I didn’t know existed. Because he saw, I became a writer.
Jesus saw the woman in Mark 14 reflecting His love back to him. He saw her breaking through the barrier of what others might think. He saw her letting go of what most people would have held onto. He saw her pouring out all she had for Him and because He saw her display of self-forgetfulness, she became a part of His story.
In Mark 14:9 Jesus declares “Wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”
Jesus’ life is the gospel! So, wherever the story of Jesus’ life is told, her reflection of love is also told. She became a woman that we’re still talking about today. She became beauty in the broken. She became an example for all of us of a woman who went ALL IN. It all started with her example of genuine love and deep devotion, expecting nothing in return.
What example are you living out for others to see? Are you bottled up in fear, doubt, or judgement? Or are you discovering the beauty that comes from pouring out devotion, peace, and trust?
That night in Bethany, with eyes of faith, she was the only one who saw the new thing that God was about to do-- the new thing that the prophet Isaiah spoke about. She trusted it. She broke her jar and poured it all out.
